Through research, financial efforts and outreach, Livelocity empowers lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning (LGBTQ) people of color (POC), encourages them to live their lives openly, provides education, advocacy, & social support services, and seeks to change the hearts and minds of others to the side of equality. Livelocity also provides funding support for initiatives that empower LGBTQ persons in urban communities.

Youth Enrichment & Mentoring Program

Mentoring the Livelocity Way - A holistic mentoring program that addresses the social, emotional and cultural needs of youth ages 13-24. Mentors are trained and certified to become advocates and role models for the youth within their communities. Through two-on-one and group mentoring efforts, our mentors forge relationships that positively impact our greatest resource: our youth. The program focuses on building essential skills needed to become productive, contributing citizens.

Workshops for youth include topics such as:
• Positive Self Identity and Personal Vision
• Life Skills
• Social and Emotional Skills
• Moral Character
• Work Ethic
• Academic Assistance
• Lifelong Learning

The Emerging Leaders Program

As LGBTQ issues are increasingly in the forefront of issues in the city, state, and country as well as in the POC communities, effective grassroots advocacy has never been more important to ensure that the experiences and views of LGBTQ POC are brought to the table and considered when decisions are made. The Livelocity Emerging Leaders Grassroots Advocacy Program is designed to give LGBTQ individuals of color the knowledge and tools to be grassroots advocacy leaders in their organizations, the LGBTQ communities, and in their racial/ethnic communities.

The Emerging Leaders Grassroots Advocacy Program is an eight week education and skills building program that will be held twice a year in January and April. It is designed to provide intensive training and hands on experience in all aspects of LGBTQ grassroots advocacy.

The Program Consists of:
• Sessions covering Basic Grassroots Advocacy Strategy and Tactics, Legal Guidelines for LGBTQ Advocacy, Understanding City Hall and Albany, Holding an Effective Meeting with Elected Officials, Tools for Effective Advocacy, Introductions to Social Media and Video Communications, Engaging Churches, Tools for Effective Board Membership, Engaging your Racial Community, Civic Engagement, and Working with the Media.
• Projects including organizing a Pride or Empowerment & Wellness Retreat event (depending on the time of the year) and creating a video telling an effective advocacy story on the ground.
• Developing an advocacy plan for the participant’s LGBTQ POC community. Upon completion of all elements of the program, participants will be designated and recognized as Livelocity “Advocacy Captains” for their community.

Community Advocacy Project

We engage in advocacy and education activities on multiple levels, working to ensure that the voices of LGBTQ people of color are part of the important conversations that impact our communities.

Our advocacy and educations aims are currently focused on two areas: combating exclusion of LGBTQ people of color in the White LGBTQ Communities and combating homophobia in the POC community. In reaching these aims we intend to meet with national, state, and local LGBTQ organizations and educate them on research findings (see research section). In addition, we intend to meet and work with churches and other POC organizations to figure out ways to reduce homophobia. With all groups we will attempt to have LGBTQ POC gain a seat at the table and contribute to decisions made at these organizations.

Research Project

Little concrete information is available about the LGBTQ POC community. We would like to lay the ground work for a survey to be conducted to get the answers to some of these questions and to eventually conduct that study by providing the survey at Black Prides events.

The results of such research will increase the baseline of data on LGBTQ POC and LGBTQ people of all ethnic backgrounds. We hope to work with various foundations as well as federal, state, and local funding agencies to more aggressively promote research and policy advocacy related to LGBTQ POC communities.
